I moved schools twice in one year and the second move was my own fault
I teach lower secondary and I took a post at an international school in Bangkok in 2022. The first year went well enough. Then I moved again in the summer to a school forty minutes north, and that second move was entirely a mistake I made myself.
What happened was that I chose the school and only afterwards looked at where I would live. It sounds obvious written down. In practice the school sent a very friendly relocation email with three neighbourhoods listed, I assumed those were the sensible ones, and I signed a year on a place in the first of them. Nobody had said that traffic in that direction is not the same in both directions. Forty minutes on the map became eighty in the morning.
I broke the contract in March and paid two months to leave. The school was kind about it, which somehow made it worse.
What I would say to anyone taking a post abroad: look at the commute before the contract, not after, and look at it at seven in the morning, not at eleven when you visit.
Also the second flat has a neighbour who practises trumpet, and I have decided that this is simply my life now.
One practical thing, since it is the part I got wrong. I now check https://thailand-real.estate/ for the area first and the school second, and I write down how long each listing stays up, because that says more about an area than the price does.
