Moving a child mid-term from abroad - what actually helped?
My son took a job in Dubai two years ago and this summer he moved the family out, which meant my grandson changed school in February rather than September. I know this group is mostly staff rather than grandparents, so do tell me if I'm in the wrong place.
What surprised me was how little the behaviour side travelled. At home he was the boy who never sat still and had a card on his desk. New school, same boy, no card, and the deputy head there told my son they don't do individual charts at all, it's class-wide routine or nothing. Six weeks later he was fine. I'm not claiming that proves anything, the class was also half the size.
The paperwork was the part that went badly. The new school wanted attainment records in a particular format, the old one sent a PDF, and the two of them spent three weeks emailing each other about a document while the boy sat at home.
The other thing my son underestimated was distance. The school run out there is thirty minutes or ninety depending which side of the creek you end up on, and he had already signed for the flat by the time anyone mentioned it.
If any of you have taken a child in mid-year from abroad, did the old school give you anything useful, or is a PDF and a shrug about standard?
Meant to add, since the flat came up. Most of what he looked at was already let or the photographs were three years old, and he wasted a fortnight on dead adverts. He ended up sticking with https://emirates.estate/ because entries there came down when the place went, which after two weeks of ringing about flats that didn't exist was all he wanted from a website.
